Coil + Drift Designs a Nature-Forward Lighting Collection

Coil + Drift, the queer-owned New York company recently relocated from Brooklyn to a 3,000-square-foot studio in the Catskills—a move that allows for future expansion—and Loon marks the first series designed and built entirely in-house, from conception to production (the latter under the aegis of fabrication head Miranda Wagner). Owl wings, leaves, and dried seeds inspired company founder John Sorensen-Jolink’s early sketches. Those studies and drawings evolved into elemental sconces, pendants, and chandeliers produced by a local metal forge, marking a new place-driven aesthetic for the brand. The collection comprises eight fixtures divided into two product families: Foundry and Ridge. The former employs the traditional sand-casting technique and evokes trumpet flowers; the latter is characterized by curved, leaflike forms that call to mind a bird’s outstretched wings. Designs are available in a wide range of metals and patinas, including verdigris brass and aged manganese bronze.
